Weight Loss Supplements - Do They Really Work?

With two-thirds of Americans being overweight these days, the marketplace is filled with supplements that promise to help burn away the pounds. In fact, some go so far to say that they will do all the work for you. Reports of deaths related to these drugs, not to mention their heavy price tag, have led many to question just how reliable they really are.

A recent study by British researcher Max H. Pittler, MD, shows very little evidence of these supplements really assisting in weight loss. The reason that many of these weight loss supplements seem to work is known as the placebo effect. This simply means that by merely believing the supplement is helping them they will in fact lose weight. In Pittler's study, a dozen weight loss supplements were tested and of them only two, Ephedra and Chromium Picolinate, produced better results than a placebo. Ephedra however, has been banned by the FDA and should not be taken should you find a product that contains it.

Even if a few of these supplements do aid your weight loss, in the absence of exercise and better eating habits they are useless. Most of these products make unsubstantiated claims promising instant results with little or no effort by the consumer. They are legally permitted to make these claims because of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 which allows any product of plant origin to be sold freely.

The danger is that while these are mainly natural substances, in a condensed form they can cause many adverse affects such as high blood pressure, sedation, and fluid loss. Unfortunately, the FDA cannot do studies and deem them illegal until there have been cases of people getting ill or dying.

Besides the health risks associated with these supplements, there is the factor that these products are usually very expensive and can put a strain on a person's wallet which in these times of economic uncertainty can be just as hazardous.

If you are one of the many people who are battling a weight problem, make sure you are excising regularly and watching your calorie intake. The key to burning fat is simply burning more calories than you consume. Find the recommended calorie intake for someone your age and weight and do your best to stick with it. Food purchased from the grocery store will usually have its amount of calories somewhere on the container. It's extremely important to remember to avoid fast-food restaurants at all costs.

Start a daily exercising regimen and be faithful to it. Make sure you get in some exercise every day. You will find that doing a half-hour of exercise daily will show much greater results than exhausting yourself once a week. Remember to ask the advice of your physician before changing your diet or beginning a new exercise regimen. Your doctor may also be able to prescribe medication to aid you if he or she believes you can benefit from it.

Diets DO Work for Weight Loss

Its so easy to screw up your weight loss plan with a bad diet.

I know, there are too many diets, but I believe some of them work. Why can't the experts agree on just one nutrition program?"

Well, first, let me say that I believe diets DO work, and that there are so many of them because we all have such different personalities and likes and dislikes for foods, that it really shouldn't come as a huge surprise that a bunch of different diets can work.

That said, I'm not a huge fan of extreme diets. I don't think you have to restrict yourself of carbohydrates. After all, that's never going to work if you've been raised to eat an apple and a banana everyday.

You can eat apples and bananas and oranges and still lose weight. Almost all foods can be incorporated into a healthy fat loss plan.

So I'm about to give you my preferred nutrition plan. It's not extreme. It's not crazy. It's not about denying you any healthy foods. You can eat meat, carbohydrates, and healthy fats on this program.

It's really all about eating whole, natural foods. In fact, I sometimes joke that my plan should be called the "dental floss diet", because almost every food in the plan requires you to floss after eating it (apples, nuts, meat, oranges, broccoli, etc., etc.).

So live a healthy lifestyle, eat whole, natural foods, and avoid fast food. Its that easy.

After all, there's a saying in the fitness industry, "you can't out-train a bad diet", and that hold's true almost 100% of the time (and especially as you get older).

Fortunately, I also believe that good nutrition for fat loss is very simple. And here are my 5 steps to building a fast fat burning diet.

1) Find out how much you are eating now. Use fitday.com.

2) If you are not losing weight, eat less.

3) Eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, and good protein sources. No more processed foods.

4) Give yourself one treat meal per week to look forward to - not a treat day, just a treat meal.

5) Plan ahead. On Saturday or Sunday, go to the store, buy all your food, and then cook it and freeze it for the week. You will avoid bad habits this way. Identify obstacles and come up with solutions to avoid them.

That is it.

Very simple. Most people do pretty well on 1-3 and even 5, but mess up on number 4. People cheat a lot more than they admit to me. You have to be honest with what you are eating. Track it for a few days. It could be shocking.

The little things can add up to big time problems. Record your diet.

And all of this can be avoided if you follow rule #5.

Green tea is has become a daily favorite of mine in view of its awesome health virtues. Funny how something tastes better the healthier you think it is for you! So, what are the remarkable benefits of this auspicious drink?

Green tea has been found to promote weight loss, reduce the risk of heart attack, prevent against cancer, protect your teeth and gums and offer relief for arthritis. Not bad for a leaf! These traits are due to a super concentration of antioxidants called catechins known for their outstanding health traits.

A study led by Dr. Dulloo at the University of Geneva, published in the December 1999 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that men given a combination of both caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given caffeine or placebo alone.

Results found that the men taking green tea extract had a significant increase in their measured energy expenditure (the number of calories used in a 24 hour period) and significant decrease in their respiration quotient (how well the body utilized carbohydrates, proteins and fats over a 24 hour period) over those taking just caffeine or placebo. The men taking green tea extract also used more fat calories than the placebo group.

The scientists believed that the catechin flavonoids in the green tea extract (potent antioxidants) may alter the body's use of norepinephrine, a chemical transmitter in the nervous system, to increase the rate of calorie burning.

They concluded, Green tea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond that explained by its caffeine content per se. The green tea extract may play a role in the control of body composition via sympathetic activation of thermogenesis, fat oxidation, or both.

Pro Heart

The cholesterol-lowering effects of green tea and black tea have been confirmed in countless studies. The French Paradox, namely the French high fat diet with comparably low rates of heart disease, is believed to be due to the flavonoid resveratrol found in wine.

In 1997, researchers from the University of Kansas found catachin EGCG in green tea to be twice as powerful as resveratrol, which may explain why heart disease rates among Japanese men is quite low despite around 75 per cent of them being smokers.

In one 25 year study (the Zutphen Elderly Study; Hertog, M., et al., 1993), those that drank more than 8.5 ounces of tea per day had a much lower risk of experiencing or dying from heart attacks than those drinking less tea. Test tube studies have also found that green tea decreases the clumping of blood cells, reducing the risk of clotting associated with heart attacks and strokes.

Cancer Protective

Human and animal studies suggest green tea may be preventive against a variety of cancers including bladder, colon, esophageal, breast, pancreas, rectum, and stomach. In 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published a study that indicated drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent!

Aid For Arthritis

The anti-inflammatory action of green tea, due to its flavonoid content, has shown promise for arthritis relief. Research by scientists at Case Western University (Haqqi et al., 1999), suggests that green tea antioxidants serve to postpone the onset and decrease the severity of one type of arthritis in mice.

Green tea is touted for oral health by asian practitioners and recent scientific research supports this use. Studies in animals and humans have shown how green tea can effectively combat the bacteria that causes cavities in teeth. Green tea also contains fluoride that is protective for teeth.
